Bristol Police Institute Monthly Traffic Safety Recognition Program

by Captain Darryl Milligan
Bristol VA Police Department

(August 19, 2011) In April 2011, the Bristol Police Department began a monthly traffic safety officer recognition program. A Certificate of Achievement is given each month to the officer(s) with the highest number of citations/arrests in the areas of DUI, speeding, and seat belt enforcement. Along with the certificate, officers recognized for their efforts in seat belt enforcement are being given a Click It or Ticket lapel pin.

Shown here are pictures of Chief W. H. Price presenting the July certificates to Officer Jason Barlow (for DUI) and Officer Mark Edwards (for seat belt and DUI). Officer Edwards has received the seat belt enforcement certificate and Click It or Ticket pin for April, May, June AND July so far and he said it is his goal to receive all 12 pins!

Also recognized for July were Sergeant David Varble for his 38 citations for speed enforcement and Officers Chris Marshall, Jeanette Loudy, and Brandon Barr for DUI enforcement with 1 arrest each. These officers were unavailable for photos at time of presentation.

In January, the officer who performs the most outstanding job to improve traffic safety in Bristol, VA will be recognized as Officer of the Year in Traffic Safety.  It is emphasized that this is not a contest, but rather a way to recognize good work and encourage officers to help eliminate bad behavior in motorists through enforcement.
