St. Patrick's Day Enforcement Activities

The Albemarle County Police, in conjunction with the Virginia State Police, University of Virginia Police and Albemarle County Sheriff's Office, conducted three sobriety checkpoints on St. Patrick's Day.  The sobriety checkpoints were conducted on Richmond Road at VDOT Way, Scottsville Road at Avon Street and the 2400 block of Ivy Road.

This DMV grant funded initiative comprised of sixty law enforcement officers who screened 1,576 vehicles.  Among the 1,576 vehicles screened, a total of 109 arrests were made and summonses were issued, including...

  • 5 DUI arrests
  • 1 open container violation
  • 1 outstanding larceny warrant arrest
  • 1 felony possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute
  • 11 suspended license citations
  • 17 operating a motor vehicle without a license
  • 34 Virginia State inspection violations
  • 16 various equipment violations
  • 8 expired registration violations
  • 4 failures to properly secure child using a safety restraint system
  • 3 adult seat belt citations
  • 2 speeding summonses
  • 2 failures to display a front license plate
  • 1 summons for no driver's license in possession
  • 1 failure to obey a highway sign

This was the first time in the history of the Albemarle County Police Department that multiple sobriety checkpoints were used to combat drinking and driving.

Henrico County Police Division conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint in coodination with "Checkpoint Strikeforce" and St. Patrick's Day.  Officers checked more than 1,100 vehicles during the checkpoint and made the following arrests:

  • 4 - Impaired Driving Arrests
  • 3 - Drug Arrests
  • 2 - Fugitive Arrests
  • 115 - Other Traffic and Criminal arrests

Several citizens came through the checkpoint and expressed their thanks for our efforts.  Police also are very thankful for the numerous designated drivers that came through the checkpoint.  We truly appreciate your efforts to help us keep the roadways safe.  We continue to encourage citizens that plan on consuming alcohol to always have a plan on how they are getting home, without driving.

Henrico County Police is committed to removing impaired drivers from the roadways through checkpoints and saturation patrols.
