2-day "Operation Kids" Class

The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police (VACP) is pleased to offer these two-day Operation Kids Child Passenger Safety Trainings April 22-23, 2008 in Abingdon and May 5-6, 2008 in Vinton. These two-day courses are taught through a combination of lectures, role-playing, and hands-on practice with seat belt systems and child safety seats.

Classes will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and last until 4:00 p.m.   Participants will be required to be in attendance for the entire class period for both days. Comfortable clothing should be worn and students must be prepared for the physical activity required to install a child safety seat in various types of motor vehicles.

On the second day (April 23rd and May 6th, respectively), the class will participate in a seat check event inviting parents and care providers to have their child safely seats checked for proper installation.  Law enforcement personnel are requested to wear their agency-approved uniform while participating in the seat check stage of the training (April 23rd or May 6th).

Participants should have an interest in promoting child passenger safety and serve as a resource person for their organization within the community.  Training is made available at NO COST to the agencies and 14.5 hours of in-service credits will be awarded for participation.  This training is limited to the first 15 registered participants.

Transportation, lodging and meals are the responsibility of each participant attending the class.

Technician Instructor Don Allen from the Virginia Association of Chiefs for Police will offer refresher / update classes at the Regional Criminal Justice Academies listed above. Classes will start at 8 am and finish at 3 pm at each location.

Classes are for CPS Technicians and Operation Kids trained individuals. Technicians will receive 6 CEU’s towards re-certification and In-service credits for attendance. After the class Technicians who need to complete seat installation towards re-certification will be able to do so in the parking lots at the academies. Operation Kids trained individuals will receive In-service credits for attendance.

CLASSES ARE FREE; participants must provide for their own lunch.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a re-certification class if your Technician status is expired. (A one day re-certification class will be available later this year for Technicians who have expired. )

4-day NHTSA Child Passenger Safety Technician Course

Time: 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., each day Monday through Thursday
Fee: $60.00 (Charged by Safe Kids Worldwide for National Certification)

The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police is pleased to offer a four-day National Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification Training Class at the Roanoke Police Academy, July 14-17.

This class is a controlled class, by invitation only, for Law Enforcement Personnel within the Lynchburg, Roanoke and New River region. Participants are required to request a seat in this class prior to class registration and payment of fee.

Don Allen, Bob Wall and Jill Lucas, Technician Instructors, will be conducting the class from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day with a community project checkup event held on Thursday from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, within Roanoke, Virginia.

Participants are required to be in attendance for each day of scheduled instruction. Causal clothing that meets with existing Roanoke Police Academy policy is recommended. Participants will receive the DCJS Form PIC-3, with 33 hours of career development in-service credits at the conclusion of the training.

Safe Kids Worldwide requires a $60.00 fee to cover the training manual, registration, two-year certification and periodic updates. The credit card payment is the easiest and most convenient method with the least amount of problems. No local fees will be charged by the instructors, Roanoke Police Academy or the VACP for this course. Transportation, lodging and meals are the responsibility of each participant.

TO REGISTER: Go to www.safekids.org/certification. Click on "Find A Course", enter the Course ID number — VA20080418356 — and then check the box for "Also show invitation only/controlled courses". Click "Select", at the end of course information and then, at the bottom, check the box for: “Click here to determine if you are eligible for this course”.

NOTE: If you do not have a previous profile (user name and password), click on “Click here” under New Signup. Provide the requested information for username and password profile.

When received (individual profile), go back into site again with this information (username & password) and then click on “View Course Registration History”, and search by ID # again. Check the box to show courses by invitation only/controlled courses. At Course Information page, click on “Request instructors approval”. This request will be approved or rejected and you will get an e-mail as to this status.

If approved for the course, you can enter you payment information and register for the class at this point.
